Fieldwork After Sixty” in the Longmire Recital Hall at 4 pm.

Abstract: From June, 2007 until May, 2008, I lived in Bali Indonesia, conducting fieldwork in a small community (banjar), where I played with a local gamelan angklung group for Balinese Hindu cremations. Today, I share some of the unexpected surprises I encountered there. I’ll set some scenes and read some entries from my (un-edited) diary, so that you can hear a more direct voice, one that was often struggling with existential questions, like life and death, childhood and old age, and changing gender identites.
